The measurement principle is based on the time of ultrasonic transmission between detector probes. The time it takes for ultrasonic waves to travel from one probe to another is related to the wind speed and ultrasonic path. The detector simultaneously measures the ultrasonic transmission time of the ultrasonic path in two directions on a probe. If the wind speed is zero, the transmission times for sending and returning are equal. The wind between the ultrasonic passages has a headwind propagation time that increases and a downwind propagation time that decreases. By measuring these two propagation times, the microcontrol unit calculates the wind speed between the passages. The measured wind speed is not affected by environmental factors such as altitude, temperature and humidity. It is a truly maintenance-free ultrasonic wind speed and direction detector.
